PIMA COUNTY, Ariz. — Authorities in southern Arizona are conducting an active search for 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, the mother of NBC “Today” show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, after she was reported missing over the weekend.
Last Known Whereabouts and Report
Nancy Guthrie was last seen at her residence in the Catalina Foothills area just north of Tucson on Saturday night at approximately 9:30–9:45 p.m. local time, according to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department. Her family reported her missing around noon Sunday after failing to locate her.
The sheriff’s department has described her as a “vulnerable adult” in poor physical health who does not have known cognitive issues. Authorities do not yet know what she may have been wearing when she disappeared.
Investigation Details
Sheriff Chris Nanos said aspects of the situation and conditions found at her home have raised “grave concern,” and homicide detectives as well as search-and-rescue teams are assisting in the effort. Law enforcement officials have not ruled out foul play at this stage of the investigation.
Search efforts involve ground crews, drones, and aircraft as authorities pursue all available leads. Local hospitals and medical facilities have also been contacted as part of the inquiry.
Family Response and Public Appeal
An NBCUniversal spokesperson confirmed the case is being treated as a missing persons investigation and stated that the Guthrie family is working closely with law enforcement. The family has expressed gratitude for public support. Public appeals have been issued urging anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.
Savannah Guthrie had recently returned to the “Today” show after a brief absence for vocal cord surgery, and her status on the program may be affected by this ongoing family emergency.
Description and Safety Information
According to reports, Nancy Guthrie is approximately 5 feet 5 inches tall, weighs around 150 pounds, and has brown hair and blue eyes. At this time, there are no confirmed sightings or public updates on her location.
Context
The involvement of homicide detectives in a missing persons case is relatively uncommon and reflects the heightened concern among investigators rather than confirmation of specific criminal activity. Authorities emphasize that the search remains a search-and-rescue operation as they pursue all possible outcomes.
